During WWII, my father was a Lieutenant in the US Army who, after the breakout from Anzio, trudged north into France. The family lore has it that he met Gertrude Stein somewhere as his unit advanced north. She was kind to him and gave him the gift on an egg, indeed a precious thing in that time. The story goes that he shared this egg with his ~15 men. Supposedly, this event is recorded in the cookbook of Alice B. Toklas. While I wait impatiently for Amazon to deliver a copy of the cookbook to me, I thought I might query the literary community for suggestions about the truth of the story and to figure out just where this meeting might have taken place. One strong possibility is Culoz, France, in the Bugey.
Any and all communications about this bit of history, quite unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but dear to me and my family, would be appreciated.
